Autumn Fun!

As the weather changes and autumn creeps towards us we’ve got lots of suggestions to make it an exciting time for the little ones…

Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

Combine arts and crafts, fresh air, exercise and a physics lesson into one activity by making a kite and taking it flying on a blustery autumn day.

To make your own kite:

  • Cut a (gardening strength) bin bag into a diamond kite shape.
  • Carefully cut two lengths of wooden dowelling to provide the structural support and secure them to the kite with heavy duty tape.
  • Make a small hole in the bin bag at the section where the two pieces of dowelling cross over and tie one end of your kite line to the cross section.
  • At the other end of your kite line, attach a small wooden block or rectangle of cardboard for you to wind the line around and use as a handle.
  • Use some spare bin bag plastic to make a ribbon/tail to stream from the kite and flutter in the wind as you fly it!

Conker Collecting

No doubt a playground favourite from your youth, the game of conkers is an iconic autumn activity. To become the champion you’ll need the best conkers you can find, so head out collecting as soon as you can!

Top tips for a hard conker:

  • Place a handful of conkers in a shoebox and leave in a cupboard for a whole year! Some will go mouldy but the ones that survive will be nice and hard.
  • For a quicker solution, soak a conker in vinegar for two minutes, then bake at 250 degrees for 90 seconds.
  • Another tip is to coat them in varnish or apply a couple of layers of nail varnish remover to harden the shell.

Indoor Camping

Just because the nights are getting colder it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the best bits about camping! If you have a small enough tent to fit in the living room then great, otherwise you can build an indoor shelter from bed sheets, clothes airers and chairs to put the sleeping bags into for a night ‘under canvas’.

Take it or Leaf it

As the leaves fall from the trees and cover the garden in lovely orange, red and gold colours, use them to your advantage before putting them in the recycling bin! Ask your young artists to paint the scene if you can view the garden from a window, or go and collect the best leaf to do a close-up picture of the shape and texture. When you do get round to raking the leaves into a pile, don’t forget to jump into them before tidying them away!
